Breakthrough Breast Cancer

A local charity that aims to eradicate breast cancer through research, campaigning and parliamentary work.

The vision of this local charity was of a centre of excellence for breast cancer research, with experts working under one roof on a coordinated programme of research. Breakthrough Breast Cancer was founded to make this a reality.

Their aims are also to:
• Initiate and support research which aims ultimately to eradicate breast cancer by discovering the causes of the disease, finding methods of prevention and developing new treatments
• Create a focus for breast cancer research through the Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre.
• Encourage the rapid communication of research findings for the practical benefit of people with breast cancer.
• Foster partnerships between organizations concerned with breast cancer.
• Promote breast cancer education and awareness among the public, policy makers, health professionals and the media.
• Campaign for policies that support breast cancer research.

Breakthrough was originally the vision of Bill Freedman and his children. Bill's wife, Toby Robins, died from breast cancer in 1986. Together with Professor Barry Gusterson of the Institute of Cancer Research, Bill recognised that a new approach was needed to tackle this disease.

Currently, seven teams work side by side on a coordinated research programme, unravelling the causes and mechanisms of this disease. Benefiting from links with other researchers and clinicians at the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden Hospital, scientists at the Centre are at the hub of the largest cancer facility in Europe.

In addition to the Breakthrough Research Centre, Breakthrough has also made impressive progress in campaigning for better breast cancer services.
