Bar Pro Bono Unit

The Bar Pro Bono Unit is dedicated to increasing access to justice. The Public pages on this website provide information about the Unit for members of the public.

 

The Bar Pro Bono Unit acts as a clearing house, matching barristers prepared to undertake pro bono work with those who need their help. They help people who cannot obtain public funding (legal aid) or cannot afford to pay for the help you need, or get it elsewhere. The Unit is a charity with limited resources, and can only help in some cases.

Their barristers can assist with any of the specialist services which they would give in a paying case including:

• Written legal advice on your case
• Legal advice in a meeting with you
• Representation in courts, tribunals and at mediation

They depend on the hard work of all of our volunteers to deliver help to those who need legal assistance, but who through lack of resources are unable to obtain it. Each year they assist in many cases throughout the country where, but for the time and effort given pro bono, very different results might have been seen in a case.
 

You can help the Bar Pro Bono Unit by volunteering or by donating.

The volunteers they take on cases are mainly barristers practising across England and Wales, and covering all legal areas at all levels of seniority. The Unit has a pre-registered panel of barristers, and also relies on those who are not on the panel to assist us where a case arises in the area of law they specialise in. Volunteers include Barristers, Clerks, Solicitors and Administrative Volunteers.

The Bar Pro Bono Unit is an independent charity which relies on donations to meet all its running costs. Gifts made on a regular committed basis (for example by standing order) are particularly appreciated, as they allow them to plan properly for the future. Please give generously to help them continue their work – all donations are gratefully received and acknowledged.
