South Place Ethical Society

South Place Ethical Society is the oldest freethought community in the world

Based at Conway Hall, London, the South Place Ethical Society is the oldest freethought community in the world. It was founded in 1793 as a dissenting congregation and for more than two centuries has been a focus for serious discussion of basic ethical principles.

By 1888 SPES had rejected the existence of God and became an Ethical Society, the only one which now survives. SPES is now an educational charity and maintains a proud tradition of free enquiry in all areas of thought and action. It is a centre of self-education and a forum for the public debate of philosophical and related issues, including current scientific and social controversies.

It arranges many talks, courses and seminars for members and interested non-members as well as the famous seasons of Sunday chamber music concerts. A new tradition is the annual Skene Memorial Lecture, on a psychological topic, held in the summer. Their monthly journal, Ethical Record publishes summaries of the lectures along with news, information and a lively Viewpoints column.

There are many different ways to support South Place Ethical Society.

- Give a donation to SPES: cheque or cash, covenants, ‘Give As You Earn’ through your payroll at work, Gift Aid.
- Give personal resources to SPES: become a member, volunteer at their activities, leave a legacy.
- Give other resources to SPES: gifts in kind such as books, furniture and IT equipment, second a member of your staff to SPES.
