Walks for July

Our guided lunchtime walks for this month

Most walks start outside Holborn Underground Station.  They begin at 1pm and last for 45mins, unless otherwise specified.

 

Wednesday 2 July – Masonic Holborn 
This walk provides a tour of a number of sites in Holborn connected with Freemasonry.

 

Friday 4 July – The Founding Hospital (new start point)
The Foundling Hospital was the first institution in Britain to care for abandoned children.  This walk includes free admission and a guided tour of the Founding Museum and a visit to the Coram organisation.  This tour starts from the junction of Lamb's Conduit Street and Guildord Street at 1.00pm

 

Saturday 5 July – Holborn: then and now (3pm start)
The London Festival of Architects will be the biggest event of its kind in the world this year, engaging with many of the agencies involved in London's environment, including; the Mayor's office, Design for London, local authorities, developers, and architectual practices.  As an official part of the Festival programme, inholborn is proud to announce a special walk led by guide Aly Mir and locally based architect Mary Thum.  You will be introduced to the amazing variety of architecture that now makes up Holborn - from the 17th to the 21st Century.  This walk will last 2 hours, starting from 3.00pm from outside Holborn Station 

 

Wednesday 9 July – The Bloomsbury Group (new for 2008)
This tour visits some of the many sights just north of Holborn connected with the Bloomsbury Group of writers, artists and intellectuals.  This walk will last an hour and a half, starting at 5:30pm from outside Holborn Station, and ending at 7:00pm in Gordon Sqaure. 

 

Friday 11 July – Knights Templar
The ancient order set up its first English base in Holborn before moving to the New Temple Church (as featured in The Da Vinci Code).  Visit both sites on this tour.

 

Wednesday 16 July – Homes of Famous People
This tour visits some of the houses formerly occupied by famous people, including the first British Prime Minister to be assacinated; the founder of modern China; and an important dwelling from the history of art. 

 

Friday 18 July – The Huntarian Musuem (new for 2008)

The Huntarian Musuem at the Royal College of Surgeons has one of the oldest anotomical collections in the world.  Includes free admission and a guided tour of highlights of the Musuem.

 

Wednesday 23 July - Covent Garden (new for 2008)

Today we take a short walk to Covent Garden to find out about its evolution from religous site to tourist attraction.

 

Friday 25 July - Suffragette City (new for 2008)

Today we visit several sites in Holborn linked to the struggle for women's equality.

 

Wednesday 30 July - Sale of the Century (new for 2008)

Today's walk takes us on a visit to some of the shops around Holborn that are over 100 years old.
